To find out how and why conference started at first place, we have to go back in year 1995. Going so far back in the history we can expect totally different time, with different student habits, student life in general and in our situation the very beginning of a new country, new regime, new currency…
Members of International office at Student organization of University of Maribor visited different conferences in different cities and countries (Valladolid, Eindhoven, Trondheim, Liege...). Full of information and experiences they all had the same idea of organizing the first student conference in Maribor. Two of the founders were Igor Jurišič and Alen Ivankovič. Igor still works with students as head of Hosteling International Slovenia. The name of the first conference was SCAN which means Student conference against nationalism. Later it was renamed in SCiM – Student conference in Maribor. Their goal was meeting of young, exchange of opinions, socializing, networking, etc. On the first conference the topic was based on events on Balkan area - war in Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia and Slovenia and national conflicts.
At that time conferences were the best way for meeting students from all around the world, exchanging opinions and especially presenting good practices connected with study, extracurricular activities and student organization abroad in comparison to our own.
Through the years SCiM has feared some obstacles like too little applications for execution the conference in 2007 and the other problem in year 1998 was the lack of funds. Those were the main reasons for organizers to cancel the conference.
There is also a big difference in promotion of the conference. There was no internet as we know it today, no Facebook and other online platforms for promotion of the conference. The main promotion channel were formal letters to foreign universities and their student organizations.Workshops, the focus was always on the content and final documents, which has represented opinion of all participants included in conference on specified student issues. Through years we had topics like intercultural dialogue, creative workshops etc. On the other hand, we found out that participants still wanted debates and lectures on topical issues. For this reason, we decided to reintroduce theoretical parts: there were 6 of them, connected to the subject matter of poverty and social exclusion. These themes were also related to current student issues, such as scholarships, youth employment, student work, poverty among youth, youth and politics. We also began with a charity action, based on products made by participants in creative workshops.
In year 2008 we expanded our cooperation, and became partial co-organizer and a performer of workshops Youth Cultural Centre Maribor.
Through the years the number of participants stayed approximately the same, about 50 to 60. Each year, there are approximately 25 different countries presented from all over the world, which gives SCiM an international and intercultural touch.
In the current year 2016 we upgraded the agenda and workshops of the SCiM conference, to make it the best so far!
