Here are 4 main reasons why your MUN should be on Instagram:
1. You can easily track and engage with your potential delegates. Since Instagram is very similar to Twitter when it comes to hashtagging the content, you can look people up by simply typing the right hashtags. Tip: when searching, you can either use the general tags, such as "#ModelUN" or "#ModelUnitedNations", or go with specific MUN tags like "BIMUN2014" and similar. For the most current results, always add a year next to the name.
2. Beside being diplomats in session, more than anything else, MUNers are travelers and they will want to see every photo of the host city before they arrive. Luckily for you, Instagram was created for things like this. Spend an afternoon walking around your city, take the most beautiful photos of it and post them regularly through your account. This way you will be feeding their hunger for traveling by creating a tourist brochure of a sort. Also, your effort will surely result in additional applications as well.
3. Instagram will allow you to build pre-launch momentum and get everyone hyped about the conference before it even starts.
You can showoff the venue, introduce the Secretary-General
and the chairs, p
resent famous delegates and more.
4. Instagram allows you to live-photoblog from the committees. Let's face it! People love looking at photos of themselves, especially if they're coming from an official MUN account. It is a perfect connection-strengthening mechanism which builds you lasting relationships with not only your current delegates, but the future ones as well.
Instagram has several downsides as well. The major one is inability to add links to your posts. Even in case when you type the shortened version of the link, the post will not hyper-link it, meaning you will not be able to click on it. However, if you directly share the same post to Facebook or Twitter, the link will be "alive" and "clickable". Another downside are the copyright infringements, which occur all too often. Be careful what you post because you can get your account easily suspended if you do not give credit to the owners of the content you're using.
Down below, you can see an infographic about how businesses use Instagram, which is very close to how your MUN should be using it.
