You have long dreamed of running your own team, you were tired of other’s stupidity and you knew how to do things properly and well. The time comes, your team is finally assembled and here lies another great question “How to stay in touch with all of them and update them on tasks?”
If you simply think that e-mailing combined with adding them on every possible social media to which you have an account is the answer, then allow me to kindly inform you that this is yesterday’s news. Given the current change in the flow and quality of MUNers, some things may have to adjust to change. “So, what to do?” you ask.
Well, the answer is that you can provide them with the choice of letting them choose one communication platform and stick to it.
We are assuming that some major social media will be chosen and in the event of minorities, you can always ask them to switch over to one that the majority uses. Here are the reasons why I see this to be the most effective way for better results but fewer headaches in the process.
Firstly, the staffer is already aware that the medium provided is the most frequently used one, therefore, the possibilities of neglected messages are significantly decreased. Moving on, since we are talking about one platform that person understands your intention to run your team with a smooth but firm grip.
Another important factor is the “chasing my crush around one”. Similarly to the well-known habit of tracing someone’s activity on the internet, supervisors have often resulted in similar searches to find out the future of that study guide gone missing for instance. With the existence of one communication channel only, staffers can go wild but have no reason for not performing on time since they know that if one thing is missed they can be off the team.
In the event that the way of communication method is inconvenient for file sharing and e-mails happen you can gradually swift them over to mailing because “Oh, I am sorry-mailed to you ‘cause it’s faster”. Special attention should be given to special communication apps, mostly used by companies, whose details need to be thoroughly elaborated before transitioning to them.
In other words, one social medium can result in higher quality results for everyone. If you want to find out so badly the shenanigans of your staffers you can add them on platforms where details may be exposed after the conference is over. For better or for worse, try to avoid using facebook (especially if the other person has access to your wall) to convey serious messages since the differentiation between that hilarious 9gag video and your assertiveness as a leader can be easily put into doubt.
To conclude, times change so must we-it is true that we used to perceive MUN as a real-life simulation in terms of undertaking responsibilities but the wind is moving over to get away from real life, this is why simple emails won’t fully work anymore.
On a slightly different note, when you wish to connect and ask fellow MUNers for advice online, do introduce yourself, explain what you want and do not interact with the medium's features to get the other person's attention. It may seem pedantic to mention but experience asks me to do so. Enjoy browsing!
