Development or Complexity?
Everything that was bizarre yesterday has become a part of our lives today. I remember 10 years from today when my grandfather gave me his first Nokia 1100 phone to dial numbers to call my sister and things have changed from a tiresome job of pressing the phone to a gentle swipe on a smartphone. This is just a depiction of how things have changed tremendously in the recent few years. But is change the development?
Development was then defined a progressive and a positive change in the lives and living situation and now the meaning of development ranges from fundamental issues of education health and awareness to environmental agendas. Development was making our lives easier for us and we kept complaining for our betterment, easiness and comfort and things have become complicated in search of comfort. The values of past are lost in the advent of modernization and the ubiquity of technology has left piousness of nature far behind. Terrorism, human made divisions, irrational political propagandas, social chaos, the rule of money and power over thoughts, intellectuality and ethics suggest we have reached the peak of development and it is the time for the descent. It is not the time to think but it is the time to act. Things have gone wrong and we have no time for repentance. We can do and we need to because we have to. What actually was the development for?Simplicity to complexity or vice-versa.
Either it be the technical professions like researchers, scientists, teachers, engineers, bankers, entrepreneur or it be the decision making bodies like policy makers, planners, politicians, stakeholders and so on major objective of all these bodies of society is to make a positive difference. The term positivity is quite often linked with development and change. The major gist behind this very concept is that every individual focuses on positive approach on his life and way of living and that is what development is concerned about.
But if the major concern of the development was to make lives from good to better and better to best. To make a valid judgement on these issues we are not actually developed. Development has its essence on humanity, peace, happiness, equality, ethics, values, wisdom and judgement not only for the boastful present we are living but also for the better fate of our future generation and years of generations to come. Even a simple common sense can judge how can twenty or thirty years of drastic technical progress and economic turnover rule upon the values that are produced through thousand years of civilization and renaissance?
People can turn around the globe and easily point out: These are the developed countries. Oh yes! This is my dreamland. The day will come when people will be fed up of all these development stuffs and The Himalayas will be packed for meditation in search of peace that is what matters for living and the day is not so far. Thousands of monuments like twin towers will be terrorised into ruins and then people will realise taller towers have actually blurred our vision of world, globalisation has turned our world into a global village, a village where people have lessened their brain for increasing their bank balances, bothered to knock on grandma’s door over knocking to the like button of Facebook and Instagram Celebrities.
Everything is in the pace and so are we. This is the time to stop for a moment and gaze back to the way we have travelled and see the way further. Feel the air, feel your thinking, feel everything around with the closed eyes and ask yourself: Is it the same fresh air that used to blow through Plato’s window or it is the panic air that blew in Nagasaki, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Pearl Harbour, Kabul. Get back into nature! Get back into your senses! Development never meant complications. Neither it means give up everything you created and march towards jungle for hunting with Ramapithecus. We are who we are because we have to be. And what made us is ethical thoughts produced by blending of visions of generations. What made our life simple and progressive was happiness, peace and tranquil environment. Thus we should think on calming our minds, fear, terror, environment and that is where the true essence of development resides.
And now when I stand with a selfie stick with my grandfather stuck in the wheel chair he says with the calm sarcastic voice, “That smile in the photo was not for the camera but for the feeling of togetherness when my grandson is with me”. I give a faint smile and say, “I want to live in your times grandpa”.
