Indonesia, as a country with most Muslim population in the world, has worked hard on maintaining multicultural environment under the democracy system that run by the government. Although Indonesians are bonded by the philosophy of “Pancasila” or five principal guidance of being Indonesian that shared the meaning of living in multicultural and multidimensional of every human aspect, it cannot be denied that small fracture such as different understanding of some culture or believe has impact on how people “communicate” and oftentimes it became complicated and will turn into intrastate war.
With the new government led by President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) and the rising involvement of Muslim radicals in the world led by ISIS, the Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Terorisme (BNPT) or The National Counter Terrorism Agency started to transform for better eradication of terrorism, especially after the bombing in Thamrin Street. Indonesia has long history of terrorism and bombing acts that become a headline in some major newspaper in the world. From the Bali bombing, JW Marriot Hotel, some Indonesian migrate to Middle East countries to join Islamic Jihadist and the latest was Thamrin Street bombing. We cannot denied that Muslim with wrong ideology that started the conflict but we cannot just blamed it all to Muslim community as Islam and other religion teach kindness and well-being with other human and creature. The acts of terrorism also started to recruit young people just like the militias and rebels in Africa. The same pattern also adopted by terrorist group and it does happened in Indonesia as many young people that sent to Pesantren (religion based school) are encourage to join the acts of Jihadist and Islamic organizations that lead to acts of terrorism.
For long times, they used forced that cause harm and fear to community and for some people that has disadvantages of the anti-terror personnel’s acts will take revenge. As the forced will no longer effective, the BNPT reform the policy of deradicalization, to be more of soft-human approach. The blueprint of deradicalization consist of four steps namely identification, coaching, contra-radicalization, monitoring and evaluation. Although the policy of deradicalization seems promising but the reality is not as expected since it will cover only to suspect of terrorism and doesn’t really going outside the box to the public and especially young people. The suspect of terrorism does need reorientation, re-education, and de-ideology because they might be lack of education and information and that is why they went to the wrong path of life but how about people outside the circle of terrorism? With the modernization of information and media channel, people will easily get any information and without good understanding, analysis and critics; people will easily jump into the wrong conclusion and become one of the potential radical although they have education and unlimited source of information, especially young people who are more to be follower rather than looking for the right answer by asking to the right person or place.
Young people are the next generation that will inherit the world with the whole things in it, including its problem – terrorism. Lack of proper knowledge of Islam and other religion, family issues-ignorance parents, social-society support, financial issues, low education, not fully aware of their country history and wrong environment for their development will impact their mindset and gave the wrong ideology of living and what to fight for. They need to get need reorientation, re-education, and de-ideology as the word giving a new meaning on anything according to someone’s will which sometimes left the morals behind. Mass media, especially social media, is the one whom interact with young people every day and they will easily distracted by something that is become hot issues without any information “filter” and this is why radicalization of youth is becoming one of the most important threats of international terrorism. Young people that are socially isolated or rejected (even by their parents) usually search for identity, acceptance and purpose in the wrong person or place. The situation is getting worst on the youth development by individualistic society as impact of globalized era; young people doesn’t has the urge to ask the elder as people are on their own rather than share common values and caring to one another.
Although we live in digital information era, we can also take advantages from the global transformation that keeps changing alongside with the revolution of high-technologies. Young people are at the stage when they have trust issues with any person they meet and only be friend with the one who support their opinion. Young generation that know the meaning of terrorism, with any type of terror caused by some charismatic person who can easily deliver persuasive speeches for the wrong motivation, can facilitate for community engagement or youth engagement to handle children with problematic parents or family issues, building trust with law enforcement and related organization or government bodies as their “long-hand”, working with social worker to held events and seminars on campuses or schools to complete formal education and maybe with local community or population where they can share common values of their country story and ideology, the meaning of Islam and other religion, working together to build a sustainable healthy environment for youth development by opening a workshop for capacity building for entrepreneurship, etc as financial issues are now became one of the reason why people became radical and join in the acts of terrorism. That is why it is important to be friend, to accept them, to be their role model and coach, and support them to the right path by giving opportunity to develop the skill and facilitate in workshop or event such as competition. These programs will gave young people a better option to identify who they are and provide a clear call for action that religiously and culturally justified. The young that has the right ideology will influence their circle of community and will share and pass it to the next generations who had the chance to make the world better.
