My first MUN experience was at Belgrade International Model UN (BIMUN) 2014 and it changed my life in many ways. I was the delegate of Russian Federation in UNESCO Executive Board. I have developed my oratory and debating skills, learned so much about the UN system, international law, international relations and diplomacy. The quality of the debating sessions was extremely satisfying, almost as equal as in the real UN bodies!
BIMUN is always organized in public institutions such as National Assembly, Chamber of Commerce, Belgrade City Hall, Office for Diaspora… You and everyone around you act like true diplomats. I met people from all around the world and pieces of their cultures which they shared with us at national evenings – every country has presented their food, drinks, dance, music, customs… After hard work, we had great parties! I am still friends with many people I have met at BIMUN.
After two years of being a part of BIMUN team, I can say I have learned so much. Our preparations for each conference last for 8 months – during that time I have been exploring many global topics, wrote study guides with my team colleagues, read delegate applications, did country assignments, read and evaluated position papers, wrote reports, learned rules of procedure by heart, chaired during the sessions. As an International Law student, I was always eager to learn more about the UN system and I may say that in these few years I became a young professional in various fields – environmental law, human rights, cultural heritage, climate change, sustainable development issues... BIMUN made me aware of global issues and I have decided to participate in solving some of those, at least on the community level. I got the opportunity to speak up and to share ideas with a group of ambitious people with whom I share similar interests.
This experience and all the skills and knowledge I have gained in practice helped me a lot in life and I want to share what I have learned with others.
This year, I will be Vice-Director in UNESCO at TGIMUNC conference in New Delhi in June. Cultural diversity, a mixture of customs, languages and history promises great success of this conference, so join me in India and apply here: tgimunc.com/apply/ !
