This article is published as a part of MUN Spotlight, a special series dedicated to conferences from around the globe. The aim of this series is to introduce the conferences and MUNers to our MUNPlanet audience and beyond. Today we're taking you to Amsterdam for a special interview with Steffie, the president of the board of UNISCA!
I am Steffie, the president of the board of UNISCA and previous participant of UNISCA’s conference last year.
MUNPlanet: We heard that last year’s conference was a blast. How did it go? Did it fulfill your expectations? What do you hope to accomplish this year?
It was an amazing experience. It were two weeks full of learning, debates, interesting discussions and conversations and of course a lot of fun. This year we hope to accomplish another successful conference, since this year it will be the 20th anniversary already.
MUNPlanet: What makes your conference stand out is the fact that you combine Model UNs with an academic program that bears 6 ECs. Could you describe what this academic program looks like?
We offer an academic program, accredited by the University of Amsterdam, for students from all over the world. It enables students to obtain 6 ECs after completion of the summer course. Students will have to write a position paper and make an exam.
MUNPlanet: Considering that the participants will go through intense and thorough lectures and workshops in the first week, are any pre-conference preparations necessary?
Yes, students will have to write a position paper in advance of the conference. This paper will be credited and be part of their final grade.
MUNPlanet: If there are any first-time MUNers still debating whether to apply or not, what would you say to them? Moreover, which committee would you recommend that they apply for? Should they even worry considering your academic program?
UNISCA is a great opportunity for first time MUNers, considering the length and the extensive program. First time MUNers will get all the necessary guidance.
MUNPlanet: UNISCA has been organizing Model UNs for over twenty years. How did it all start? What did it hope to accomplish? Tell us a bit about its history.
UNISCA started 20 years ago with some enthusiastic students who wanted to organize a Model United Nations in Amsterdam. From the beginning we have been a course that was linked to the University of Amsterdam, but over the years we have changed from a winter course into a summer course. We are looking forward to another 20 years.
We believe that the most important thing of a successful conference is the experience of the participants. We do our best to give the students a challenging, interesting and fun experience.
MUNPlanet: Social events are not to be forgotten. UNISCA provides an evening program for fun and relaxation. Could you tell us more? What do you have prepared?
Amsterdam is an amazing city full of history, culture and an exciting nightlife. We do not want to give too much away, but there will definitely be a boat trip along the beautiful canals.
MUNPlanet: Amsterdam is a stunning city with a rich history, highly diverse population and an exciting nightlife. What are some of the experiences your delegates should not miss out on while there?
On of these experiences is, as mentioned above, a boat trip. Amsterdam is know for its beautiful canals and experiencing Amsterdam from the water is one of the best and most fun ways to get the know the city.
MUNPlanet: What is one thought that you’d like your delegates to leave the conference with?
The one thought we would like our delegates to leave the conference is that they have experienced Amsterdam in a unforgettable way and expended their international network by joining our unique MUN!
