This article is published as a part of MUN Spotlight, a special series dedicated to conferences from around the globe. The aim of this series is to introduce the conferences and MUNers to our MUNPlanet audience and beyond. Today we're taking you to Vienna for a special interview with the WEBMUN team.
MUNPlanet: Haven’t heard from you in a long time! How have you been? In case someone hasn’t heard about you, please, introduce yourself and your conference.
Hello and greetings from the WebMUN secretariat. We are Webster Private University Vienna’s fourth Model United Nations edition and we are excited about this year’s conference.
MUNPlanet: MUNPlanet and WEBMUN have cooperated before. How did last year’s conference go?
Lovely, MUNPlanet is the best thing that has ever happened to us.
MUNPlanet: Time flies! After establishing it in 2014, this will be the fourth WEBMUN edition. Where do you hope to see the conference in five years?
We would like to expand and promote our interconnectivity system around the world.
MUNPlanet: The interconnectivity system you invented turns three this year. You still have it, so that must mean that it works well. What have you accomplished with this system? What do you hope for it to evolve into in the future?
Correct! It was truly a special moment for us to see other MUNs implementing this system. As you might know, our slogan is “Revolutionizing Model UNs” and I think that’s what we did. We would obviously love to inspire more MUNs with our words.
MUNPlanet: Last year, WEBMUN featured an impressive number of seven committees, but this year, you’ve outdone yourself and prepared eight committees. Which are usually the student favorites? Which would you recommend for beginners and which are more suitable for experienced delegates?
It is just like any other MUN, the UN SC is almost full already. My personal pick would be either OPEC or UNICEF, but it is obviously upon our delegates. For beginners I would either go for G7 or UNICEF and experienced delegates would probably have a good time at the European Council or the UN SC and for the daring one’s ICJ or Diplomatic Corps.
MUNPlanet: A committee that participants won’t get the chance to see anywhere else is the Diplomatic Corps. What can the participants that apply for it expect?
Lots of running around and trying to find the right room. A DC delegates duty is to connect all delegates that represent the same country in different committees. That is the magic behind our interconnectivity system. Without them our system would not work, they are very import and will regularly be featured on our newscast.
We all know that Model UN is not a replacement for formal education, however compliments it very well. To be honest, with 75€ WebMUN is really a steal for a 4 day central European MUN. Our interconnectivity system allows delegates to really get an authentic view on international affairs. Moreover, WebMUN is about having fun, that’s why we picked amazing social events for every evening, so that diplomacy never sleeps.
MUNPlanet: So far, WEBMUN sounds fantastic. The cherry on top is probably the visit to the UN that your participants will get to experience. Could you share more on the specifics on this?
We offer 3 different guided tours on the first day during registration. Delegates may choose to visit the UN, OPEC or go around Vienna. 1 tour is included in the fee. Registration starts at 3 pm and the guided tours starts at 5 pm so we recommend to come early ;)
MUNPlanet: The theme of this conference are the Sustainable Development Goals. What are some things that all of us can do every day to help the accomplishment of the goals?
The first step is to become aware of the issue. Afterwards everyone will find his or her way to contribute.
MUNPlanet: You’re quite famous for your fantastic social program which is both fun and delicious. What do you have prepared for the participants this year?
Food, drinks, party and a lot of fun, but for more information you will just have to join.
MUNPlanet: Let’s end this interview with something funny! We’d like to hear a funny anecdote from one of the past WEBMUNs?
Last year I was chairing NATO and the United States decided to leave NATO mid-conference, but then it seemed like they regretted their decision and committed suicide. Said delegate continued as a journalist I think. Meanwhile South Korea attacked North Korea and my delegates refused to debate without having both countries at the table, so they forced me to represent both at the same time. WebMUN really does leave a lot of space for creativity. There is just one rule, no WWIII!
Thank you for devoting your time to MUN Spotlight and telling us more about you and your conference. MUNPlanet strongly advises all MUNers to check it out. Good luck and we wish you all the best!
